This trip is designed for those seeking adventure off the beaten tourist path. We hike and trek through hilltribe areas in the north, boat and kayak in Bai Tu Long Bay, explore the Red River Delta and immerse ourselves in the local culture of a family homestay in Mai Chau. A brilliant experience!

Day 1 Arrival

Upon your arrival, we have a pick-up. This is followed by our short transfer to hotel in the Old Quarter. If you arrive early you can explore the thriving Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake and its beautiful surroundings.
 

Day 2 Hanoi sightseeing

Today, we're setting out from Hanoi bright and early to explore a variety of must-see sights. Our itinerary is packed with iconic landmarks, including the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh's stilt house, the One Pillar Pagoda, Tran Quoc Pagoda, the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison, the Museum of Ethnology, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the Old Quarter. After our adventure-filled day, we'll return to the same hotel for the night. (Breakfast and lunch are included)

Day 3 Hanoi - Ba Be National Park

Departing from your hotel in Hanoi between 7:30 to 8:00, we embark on our journey to Ba Be Lake, arriving around 13:30. In the afternoon, we enjoy a serene boat ride along the picturesque lake, which encompasses three freshwater lakes: Ba Be (Pe Lam, Pe Lu, Pe Leng). Situated at an elevation of 145m above sea level, the lake spans 8 kilometers and boasts a fascinating cave and underground stream system, contributing to its rich biodiversity and geological diversity.

Our boat journey continues along the Nang River, leading us to Puong Cave. This cave entrance stands impressively at 30 meters high, adorned with white limestone, and extends for 300 meters. Inside, vibrant stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and sizes create a fascinating sight, offering panoramic views of the river.

Our next destination is Dau Dang Waterfall, nestled in the far west and upper reaches of the river. Set amidst karst formations, the waterfall cascades in three tiers, surrounded by massive rocks and lush forest foliage. Despite its narrow width, the waterfall's force creates a misty spectacle of nature.

Following our exploration of the waterfall, we embark on a leisurely hike along the verdant riverfront, passing by charming Tay ethnic villages. Eventually, we descend to the village of Pac Ngoi, home to a Tay ethnic community. Here, our homestay welcomes us for an overnight stay. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 4 Ba Be National Park - Hua Ma Cave - Pia Thap Village

After breakfast, we embark on a short drive to Hua Ma Cave, nestled in the southern reaches of Ba Be National Park. Hua Ma is adorned with numerous unique and breathtaking formations, offering a fascinating exploration experience. Following our adventure in Hua Ma Cave, we continue our journey to the charming village of Pia Thap. En route, we pause briefly to admire the scenic Ma Phuc Pass.

Ma Phục Pass stretches for 3.5km and rises approximately 700m above sea level, winding its way between two limestone mountains. Designated as a geological heritage site within the Cao Bang Global Geopark, recognized by UNESCO, Ma Phuc is renowned for being one of the most picturesque passes in the country. Along the journey, we also have the opportunity to visit several ethnic minority villages, inhabited by the Tay, Nung, and Dao ethnic groups.

Upon reaching Pia Thap, we find ourselves amidst limestone forests, renowned for their tranquil beauty and the traditional art of incense making. Embarking our hike from the village, we wind our way through various ethnic villages, verdant hillsides and lush seasonal farmlands. Tonight, we are graciously hosted by a local Tay family, where we immerse ourselves in their warm hospitality and cultural traditions. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 5: Pia Thap - Ngoc Con & Phong Nam Valley - Ban Gioc Waterfall

Leaving Pia Thap behind, we journey northwest to Ngoc Con and Phong Nam, renowned for their picturesque landscapes in Cao Bang. Upon arrival, we are into the heart of this stunning valley, immersing ourselves in its natural beauty. Our hike leads us through majestic mountains adorned with lush limestone jungles, expansive rice fields, and tranquil streams meandering through the terrain. Along the way, we meet the local Tay and Nung ethnic minorities, offering us the opportunity to learn about their culture and life.

Our next destination is Ban Gioc Waterfall, a wonder of nature. Fed by the Quay Son River originating from China, the waterfall gracefully flows through Dam Thuy commune of Trung Khanh district. As it crosses the rice fields of Dam Thuy towards the vast alluvial plain of Ban Gioc village, it creates a spectacular sight. Against the backdrop of rice fields stand the villages of the Tay ethnic people, adorned with ancient stone houses on stilts.

Ban Gioc Waterfall itself marks the border between Vietnam and China, with its cascading waters forming a breathtaking natural wonder. The river branches into numerous streams, culminating in the impressive tiers of Ban Gioc Waterfall. Here, we leisurely stroll around the falls and its beautiful surroundings, perhaps opting for a bamboo raft ride along the pristine waters.

After our discovery of the waterfall, we venture on a hike through remote Tay villages and rice field trails, tracing the paths used by the local inhabitants. Our day concludes with a warm welcome at a local family homestay nestled amidst the verdant surroundings, accompanied by the sounds of the Quay Son River. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 6: Ban Gioc Waterfall - Nui Thung Mountain - Hanoi

This morning, we enjoy a tranquil stroll through the picturesque frontier village nestled between Vietnam and China, savoring the serene atmosphere of this unique border setting. Our journey then takes us to Nui Thung Mountain, also known as "Angel Eye Mountain." Its name derives from the colossal hole at its core, resembling a grand eye gazing from the heart of the peak. Finally, we proceed towards Hanoi via Lang Son province, a region characterized by its extensive border with China, our arrival in Hanoi is around 6 pm. The night is spent in a hotel. (Breakfast and lunch included)

Day 7 Hanoi - Bai Tu Long Bay

Departing from Hanoi between 8:00 am to 8:30 am to Bai Chay, the gateway to Bai Tu Long Bay. Upon arrival, we embark on a boating adventure, gliding through the serene waters of Bai Tu Long Bay. Discover hidden coves and towering karst formations as we explore this pristine marine landscape. Our journey continues to Cap La, where we have the opportunity to embark on a kayaking excursion. Paddle through crystal-clear waters, marveling at the beauty of the surrounding limestone cliffs.


As the sun begins to set, we make our way to Cong Do, where we will spend the night aboard our comfortable boat. Relax on the deck and soak in the tranquil atmosphere as you enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our onboard chef. Fall asleep to the gentle lapping of the waves, surrounded by the beauty of Bai Tu Long Bay. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)

Day 8 Bai Tu Long Bay - Halong Bay

After a serene night spent on the boat in Cong Do, we wake up to the stunning vistas of Bai Tu Long Bay. Our journey continues as we make our way to Vung Vieng floating village, a captivating community built on the waters of the bay. Explore the village and learn about their traditional way of life. Next, we head back to Bai Chay, where our adventure in Bai Tu Long Bay comes to an end. From there, we make our way to Lan Ha Bay.

Upon reaching the wharf at Cai Beo, we'll step aboard a beautiful and traditionally-decorated Vietnamese junk boat, blending traditional decor with modern comforts. We set sail into the enchanting waters of Lan Ha Bay. In the afternoon, we’ll venture off the boat to explore the Ho Ba Ham. This hidden gem, known as the "three tunnel lakes," is a scenic and secluded spot nestled within Halong Bay. Ho Ba Ham boasts shallow lagoons embraced by towering limestone cliffs, accessible by kayak only through low-ceiling tunnels.

Weather permitting, we’ll be able to go for a swim in the clear and emerald waters. As the day comes to an end, we'll leisurely cruise along the bay, witnessing the sunset painting the landscape with warm colour. This evening’s dinner is sure to be memorable, as we will dine on the deck of the boat. Afterwards, we have the option to try squid fishing (seasonal) or kayak amidst the bioluminescent plankton in the bay. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 9 Lan Ha Bay - Cat Ba Island

As the sun gently rises over the tranquil waters of Lan Ha Bay, we awaken to another day of adventure. Enjoy a light breakfast before boarding our day boat bound for the neighboring marvel of Halong Bay. Renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Halong Bay's breathtaking beauty is unmatched. Navigate through a maze of stunning limestone islands, karsts, and caves, immersing ourselves in the spectacular scenery. A leisurely kayak ride offers a close-up to the majestic landscape.

Our journey continues towards Bai Tu Long Bay, where a different route awaits us. As the day draws to a close our journey continues with an exploration of Viet Hai, a former fishing village nestled amidst lush jungle and surrounded by the towering peaks of Cat Ba National Park, situated in karst-studded Lan Ha Bay.

Here, we'll have the opportunity to stretch our legs as we cycle along verdant limestone mountains, exploring the village along the way. Upon arrival, we check in to our peaceful lodge nestled in the village, surrounded by spectacular mountains and lush rainforest. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)


Day 10: Cat Ba Island - Ninh Binh

Cat Ba National Park is home to verdant jungle, nestled in the karst-studded Lan Ha Bay. It boasts rich ecosystem diversity and high biodiversity, harboring many rare and precious plant and animal species, along with distinctive landscapes. After breakfast, we embark on an exploration of Cat Ba National Park, hiking into its heart and continuing onto Navy Peak. The karst mountains offer stunning vistas, with a fantastic view from the lookout.
 

Next, we'll step onto our waiting boat and glide amidst picturesque limestone mountains, before reaching the floating village of Beo. Here, we'll witness the timeless fishing traditions of the villagers, whose homes rest atop the shimmering emerald waters, nestled among stunning limestone karst formations.

Around noon we leave the bay and begin our journey to Ninh Binh. Upon arrival, we'll be warmly welcomed by a friendly local family. Here, we'll have the opportunity to share dinner with them, experiencing their genuine hospitality and savoring authentic cuisine. Later, we'll retire for the night in a cozy lodge owned by our gracious host. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)

Day 11: Ninh Binh Exploration

We depart our lodge for our journey to the pagoda of Bich Dong. Located in Ninh Binh, the Bich Dong Pagoda is a scenic site with its serene beauty and historical significance. Perched amidst stunning natural surroundings, this ancient pagoda complex comprises three levels: Lower, Middle, and Upper.

As we ascend the stone steps leading to the pagoda, they are greeted by lush greenery and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The Lower Pagoda, nestled at the base of a limestone cliff, features intricately carved statues and altars dedicated to Buddha and other deities.

Continuing upward, visitors reach the Middle Pagoda, which offers panoramic views of the picturesque countryside below. Here, they can admire ancient Buddhist sculptures and architectural details dating back centuries.

Finally, at the Upper Pagoda, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views of the entire area, including nearby karst formations and winding rivers. The tranquil atmosphere and spiritual ambiance make it a perfect place for hikers.

Leaving Bich Dong behind we embark on a serene rowing boat ride along the Nang River, surrounded by lush greenery and towering limestone cliffs. The two-hour boat excursion weaves along this enchanting river and through the Thung Nang cave system, featuring several caverns adorned with stalactites.

We also devote time to a scenic bicycle ride in Trang An. Trang An is renowned for its intricate network of rivers and caves, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rugged limestone cliffs and emerald waters. The surrounding areas are dotted with tiny villages, picturesque paddy fields, temples, and hiking trails, adding to the charm of this UNESCO World Centre.

During our bicycling excursion we weave between towering limestone mountains, serene waterways, peaceful villages, verdant rice paddies, and enchanting historical sites. This presents a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rhythms of everyday rural life.

Our journey continues as we make our way to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam, holds a special place in the country's history and heritage. Situated in the picturesque Ninh Binh province, Hoa Lu was the political and economic center of the country during the Dinh and early Le dynasties in the 10th and 11th centuries.

We explore the remnants of this once-thriving capital, including the remains of royal palaces, temples, and citadels. One of the most notable sites is the Dinh Tien Hoang Temple, dedicated to the first emperor of the Dinh Dynasty. The temple's architecture and ornate decorations offer insight into the grandeur of the era.

Nearby, the Le Dai Hanh Temple honors the founder of the early Le Dynasty and provides a glimpse into the cultural and religious practices of the time. Aside from its historical significance, Hoa Lu is also renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, with limestone karsts and lush greenery surrounding the ancient ruins. Following a leisurely stroll through nearby villages and along the banks of the tranquil Sao Khe River we make our way back to our host. Here we join a local family for a cooking lesson.

Our culinary journey begins with a visit to a vibrant local market for fresh ingredients. Additionally, we gather vegetables from our host's lush garden before learning the art of making traditional Vietnamese spring rolls, zesty dipping sauces, and sticky rice.
We enjoy the family's gracious hospitality as they share dinner with us, showcasing their wonderful cuisine. The night is spent in the same lodge. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included)

Day 12 Cuc Phuong National Park - Pu Luong Nature Reserve

After breakfast we journey to Van Long Nature Reserve. Van Long Nature Reserve is renowned for its largest nature reserve in Vietnam. Immerse yourself in the picturesque scenery as you enjoy a rowing boat ride along the nature reserve, amidst towering limestone peaks and serene backwaters.

Then, we journey to Cuc Phuong National Park, situated in Ninh Binh Province. Spanning over 200 square kilometers, Cuc Phuong is renowned as Vietnam's most celebrated national park, boasting a rich tapestry of biodiversity. As we venture into the park's verdant expanse, following scenic hiking trails we see diverse flora and fauna. Admire ancient and towering trees, vibrant flowers, and lush foliage or listen to the calls of exotic birds.

Continuing our exploration of Cuc Phuong National Park, we visit the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre and the Turtle Conservation Centre. These vital facilities provide invaluable insight into the ongoing conservation efforts dedicated to safeguarding endangered primate species and freshwater turtles.

At the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, we have the opportunity to observe and learn about the various primate species native to Vietnam, many of which are critically endangered. Through educational programs and guided tours, we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges these primates face and the conservation initiatives aimed at their protection and rehabilitation.


Similarly, at the Turtle Conservation Centre, we witness firsthand the dedicated efforts to conserve and protect Vietnam's vulnerable freshwater turtle populations. Through educational exhibits, informative presentations, and interactive experiences, we gain insight into the threats facing these endangered creatures and the measures being taken to ensure their survival.

After our visit to the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre and the Turtle Conservation Centre, we head southwest to Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Nestled in a picturesque valley over 100 kilometers northwest of Cuc Phuong, Pu Luong is inhabited by the Black Thai, White Thai, and Muong ethnic minority groups.

Renowned for their hospitality and steadfast preservation of cultural traditions, these communities boast diverse and indigenous cultures that set them apart. The undulating hills, adorned with meticulously sculpted rice terraces, provide an idyllic setting for hiking and exploration. Upon reaching Pu Luong, we will be welcomed into the home of a Black Thai family, where we will spend the night. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)


Day 13 Pu Luong Nature Reserve - Hanoi 

The day begins with a morning hike along a footpath used by the local people, amidst splendid rice terraces, verdant hills, through tiny villages and along towering mountains. Along the way, we meet the local people at work as they plough their paddy fields behind water buffaloes, tend to their seasonal crops, or fish in the river.

After enjoying a bamboo boat raft along the Ma River, which is a significant waterway in Vietnam flowing through provinces like Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Son La, known for its scenic beauty, we board our vehicle and journey back to Hanoi, arriving around 6 pm. (Breakfast and lunch are included)

Day 14 Departure

Enjoy some free time for relaxation or to explore the city before your departure flight. Our driver will transfer you to Hanoi International Airport for your flight to the next destination. (Breakfast is included)
