The Treasures of the North offers some of the most diverse travelling in Vietnam. Allow us to take you on a fabulous journey through North West Vietnam. From Sapa we venture to Sin Ho and Muong Lay, Dien Bien Phu and Son La, through the villages of Mai Chau and the Red River Delta to magnificent islands in Bai Tu Long Bay. What a great combination!
Day 0 Hanoi - Overnight train to Lao Cai
We will meet you in our office between 19:00 and 19:30 to provide more information about the trip. Following this, our driver will take you to Hanoi railway station to board an overnight train. You'll enjoy a comfortable night's sleep on board as we travel to Lao Cai. The train departs from Hanoi at 22:00 and arrives in Lao Cai at 5:45 the following morning.
Day 1 Sapa trekking
Upon our early morning arrival at Lao Cai railway station, we are greeted by our driver and transferred to Sapa town, journeying through dramatic mountains and above the scenic rice terraces of Sapa. After a refreshing shower and breakfast, we set off to discover Sapa and its nearby villages of Sa Seng and Hau Thao, nestled in a spectacularly beautiful valley and home to the Black H'mong people. We will have ample opportunities to see how they live, gaining wonderful insights into their way of life.
Along the way, we will stop at one of the friendly villages to enjoy a picnic lunch. Finally, we arrive in the village of Giang Ta Chai, situated in a stunning region. Tonight, we will spend a memorable night in the traditional stilt house of a Zay family. The Zay people are adept at rice cultivation and are responsible for tending to the manicured terraces that stretch as far as the eye can see. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 2 Sapa Trekking
The beautiful village of Giang Ta Chai is surrounded by verdant hills and rice terraces. After breakfast we will enjoy a hike through these lush rice terraces and along the green hills. In the afternoon, we will reach the village of Thanh Phu, situated in a region of sculpted rice terraces and home to the Black H’mong people. We will stroll around peaceful villages and farmlands at an easy and leisurely pace suitable for everyone. Tonight, we will stay in a homestay in the village of Thanh Phu, which is home to the Tay ethnic minority people. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 3 Sapa - Binh Lu - Lai Chau - Sin Ho
The day begins with a hike across hills and through rice terraces, passing by peaceful villages. Afterward, we will take a short drive to Binh Lu. Here, we will enjoy a delightful hike around villages and along towering, stunning mountains. Along the way, we will meet local villagers going about their daily lives. Upon arriving in Sin Ho, we will explore the charm of the township and nearby villages. Tonight, we will spend the night in a hotel. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 4 Sin Ho - Dien Bien Phu
After breakfast, we will embark on a hike along beautiful towering mountains, through lush rice terraces, and around tiny villages. Later in the morning, we will walk to our waiting vehicle and make our way to Dien Bien Phu. Tonight, we will stay at a comfortable hotel. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included)
Day 5 Dien Bien Phu - Son La
We continue our journey north to Son La province by car, taking in the spectacular mountain scenery. Along the way, we will stop to explore beautiful villages inhabited by the Black Thai and Hmong people. Upon arriving in Son La, we will enjoy the town's laid-back atmosphere and retire to a comfortable hotel for a good night's rest. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 6 Son La - Black River
The day begins with a scenic drive from Son La to the Black River. En route, we'll take a beautiful hike through splendid rice terraces and past several idyllic villages. This will be followed by an enjoyable bicycle ride around a spectacular area, featuring verdant hillocks, lush farmlands, and beautiful mountains. Finally, we will descend to Xom Moi village, located by the Black River and home to the Muong people. Tonight, we will settle in with a Muong family in a traditional wooden house to experience their way of life. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included)
Day 7 Black River - Pu Luong
The Pu Luong Nature Reserve is an area of outstanding beauty, cultural interest, and high biodiversity value, stretching from Mai Chau in the northwest to Cuc Phuong National Park in the southeast. The region is blessed with rich forests, limestone panoramas, magnificent rice terraces, and breathtaking scenery. We depart from Black River and hike along paths amid verdant hills and picturesque villages before arriving at the reserve. Here, we begin our hike to the Thai village of Hang. We relax in the cool climate, enjoying their hospitality and culture over dinner. We spend the night in our lodge. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 8 Pu Luong - Ninh Binh
We embark on a hike through lush farmlands and scenic rice terraces, winding along verdant hillsides and observing local villages and their residents going about their day. Later in the morning, we hike to our waiting vehicle and continue our journey alongside the beautiful Ma River. Upon reaching Ninh Binh, we climb up Mua Mountain to enjoy a panoramic view of the stunning surroundings, while witnessing the sunset cast its warm glow over the mystical limestone mountain range. Finally, we arrive at a typical village in Ninh Binh, where we retire to the home of a local family for the night. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 9 Ninh Binh Discovery
We depart our lodge for our journey to the pagoda of Bich Dong. Located in Ninh Binh, the Bich Dong Pagoda is a scenic site with its serene beauty and historical significance. Perched amidst stunning natural surroundings, this ancient pagoda complex comprises three levels: Lower, Middle, and Upper. As we ascend the stone steps leading to the pagoda, they are greeted by lush greenery and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The Lower Pagoda, nestled at the base of a limestone cliff, features intricately carved statues and altars dedicated to Buddha and other deities.
Continuing upward, visitors reach the Middle Pagoda, which offers panoramic views of the picturesque countryside below. Here, they can admire ancient Buddhist sculptures and architectural details dating back centuries. Finally, at the Upper Pagoda, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views of the entire area, including nearby karst formations and winding rivers. The tranquil atmosphere and spiritual ambiance make it a perfect place for hikers.
Leaving Bich Dong behind we embark on a serene rowing boat ride along the Nang River, surrounded by lush greenery and towering limestone cliffs. The two-hour boat excursion weaves along this enchanting river and through the Thung Nang cave system, featuring several caverns adorned with stalactites. We also devote time to a scenic bicycle ride in Trang An. Trang An is renowned for its intricate network of rivers and caves, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rugged limestone cliffs and emerald waters. The surrounding areas are dotted with tiny villages, picturesque paddy fields, temples, and hiking trails, adding to the charm of this UNESCO World Centre.
During our bicycling excursion we weave between towering limestone mountains, serene waterways, peaceful villages, verdant rice paddies, and enchanting historical sites. This presents a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rhythms of everyday rural life. Our journey continues as we make our way to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam, holds a special place in the country's history and heritage. Situated in the picturesque Ninh Binh province, Hoa Lu was the political and economic center of the country during the Dinh and early Le dynasties in the 10th and 11th centuries.
We explore the remnants of this once-thriving capital, including the remains of royal palaces, temples, and citadels. One of the most notable sites is the Dinh Tien Hoang Temple, dedicated to the first emperor of the Dinh Dynasty. The temple's architecture and ornate decorations offer insight into the grandeur of the era. Nearby, the Le Dai Hanh Temple honors the founder of the early Le Dynasty and provides a glimpse into the cultural and religious practices of the time.
Aside from its historical significance, Hoa Lu is also renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, with limestone karsts and lush greenery surrounding the ancient ruins. Following a leisurely stroll through nearby villages and along the banks of the tranquil Sao Khe River we make our way back to our host. Here we join a local family for a cooking lesson.
Our culinary journey begins with a visit to a vibrant local market for fresh ingredients. Additionally, we gather vegetables from our host's lush garden before learning the art of making traditional Vietnamese spring rolls, zesty dipping sauces, and sticky rice. We enjoy the family's gracious hospitality as they share dinner with us, showcasing their wonderful cuisine. The night is spent in the same lodge. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included)
Day 10 Ninh Binh - Bai Tu Long Bay
Leaving from Ninh Binh, we arrive at Bai Chay, the gateway to Bai Tu Long Bay. Upon arrival, we embark on a boating adventure, gliding through the serene waters of Bai Tu Long Bay. Discover hidden coves and towering karst formations as we explore this pristine marine landscape. Our journey continues to Cap La, where we have the opportunity to embark on a kayaking excursion. Paddle through crystal-clear waters and among beautiful limestone cliffs.
As the sun begins to set, we make our way to Cong Do, where we will spend the night aboard our comfortable boat. Relax on the deck and soak in the tranquil atmosphere as you enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our onboard chef. Drift off to sleep to the gentle lapping of the waves, surrounded by the beauty of Bai Tu Long Bay. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 11 Bai Tu Long Bay Discovery
Wake up early in the morning for Tai Chi exercises. After enjoying a light buffet breakfast, take some time to relax and prepare for the day ahead. Transfer to the day cruise boat and begin cruising through Bai Tu Long Bay to the heart of Halong Bay. Along the way, explore the Trinh Nữ Cave area and the Trong Cave area. Continue towards Lan Ha Bay in the Tung Sau area, where you can enjoy kayaking and swimming in the crystal blue waters. You'll also have the opportunity to visit a pearl farm and learn about Halong Bay's agriculture.
Lunch will be served on board, featuring grilled seafood and Vietnamese delicacies, as the boat cruises back to Bai Tu Long via a different route. Explore the magnificent Me Cung Cave or Tien Ong Cave (Heaven Scene Mountain Cave). Later, we return to our overnight boat and continue weaving the Cong Do overnight area. Relax on the deck and soak in the tranquil atmosphere as you enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our onboard chef. Fall asleep to the gentle lapping of the waves, surrounded by the beauty of Bai Tu Long Bay. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included)
Day 12 Bai Tu Long Bay - Hanoi
We continue exploring the truly fascinating scenery of the bay, with vertical and unusual rocks and islets emerging from the sea. Enjoy a serene bamboo boat ride to visit the floating fishing village of Vung Vieng, Vung Vieng is a floating fishing village located in Halong Bay, Vietnam.
It is known for its picturesque setting and traditional way of life, where local people live on floating houses and make their livelihood through fishing and aquaculture. In Vung Vieng we have the opportunity to observe the daily rhythm of life. Afterward, we return to Halong City and board our vehicle for the journey back to Hanoi, arriving around 4 PM. The night is spent in a hotel. (Breakfast and lunch are included)
