2 days Black River and Mai Ha

Hanoi, Black River, Mai Ha, Hanoi

Situated in a scenic valley south-west of Hanoi, Maichau is home to the White Thai, Muong and Dao ethnic minority people. Known for their hospitality and resistance to assimilation, their indigenous and diverse cultures provide a colour and individualism different from that found in others. The rolling hills coupled with their sculpted rice terraces make an ideal place for hiking.

Day 1 Hanoi / Black River
We depart from Hanoi to Mai Chau district in Hoa Binh province (150 km). On arrival in Mai Chau, we explore a wide and well graded trail branching off the main path and winding through some small Muong villages.

This is followed by a delightful boat ride along the Black River. It is the perfect time for appreciating the beauty of the river. The night is spent in the traditional wooden stilt-house of a Muong family who lives by the river. (Lunch and dinner are included).

Day 2 Black River / Mai Ha / Hanoi
The day begins by a morning hike along a footpath amid splendid rice terraces and verdant small hills. Time is also spent cycling through tiny villages and along mountains. We follow tracks and paths used by the local people.

En route, we share fun with local farmers at work, they plough their paddy fields behind water buffaloes, tend their seasonal crops or fish in the river.

Following lunch in a local family, we board our vehicle and journey back to Hanoi, arriving there at about 5pm. (Breakfast and lunch are included).
